How to Achieve Optimal Dental Health

Somehow dental health often takes the backseat as most people consider brushing their teeth quickly in the morning more than enough. Unfortunately our teeth demand more attention and lack of proper care can lead to several problems. The food that we eat offers an appropriate environment for bacteria to develop. This leaves a film of bacteria called plaque over our teeth. Eventually we are left with toothache, cavities, bleeding or infected gums, yellow teeth and so on. However, just a little more care can help to save hundreds of dollars on dental treatment later on.

Generally speaking, dentists recommend brushing, flossing as well as using a mouthwash to keep your teeth clean and healthy. You should brush your teeth twice daily, once in the morning before eating or drinking anything and once at bedtime. It isn’t a good idea to brush immediately after eating. This is because our food is often acidic which softens the enamel covering of our teeth. Brushing immediately after eating erodes the surface of the teeth making them more sensitive and susceptible to damage. In addition to this, you should always brush in a circular motion, keeping your toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees. A quick brush of the front side is not enough. Brush the front, back as well as the chewing surface of all teeth.
The Right Toothbrush
The careful selection of a proper toothbrush and toothpaste is equally important. Your toothbrush should have a small head so that it can reach the inner recesses of your mouth easily. This ensures that the back molars are also cleaned properly. Further, the brush should have soft to medium hard bristles. Another important point is that you should change your toothbrush every three months or if you have any kind of infection, then it should be changed every month. As far as the toothpaste is concerned one should use toothpaste that contains fluoride. This helps to prevent cavities as it strengthens dental enamel.
Flossing and Mouthwash
Flossing is another integral part of good dental health. This helps to remove any food particles that may be stuck between your teeth and has not been removed by brushing. While some people prefer to use a toothpick to remove any food morsel stuck between the teeth, flossing is better as it is unlikely to cause any damage to your gums. Generally one should floss once daily before bedtime. One can also use interdental brushes in place of floss. Mouthwash is another way to ensure excellent dental health. But instead of using it immediately after brushing or flossing, you can use it after a meal if you like. as far as possible use a mouthwash that contains fluoride but is free from alcohol. Alcohol tends to dry out your mouth. Rinsing well with mouthwash cleans out any food particle left in place by mistake.
But even if you are particular about brushing, flossing and using a mouthwash, you should get a dental check up every six months. This ensures that any dental health issue is discovered before it becomes a major problem. Timely treatment can save you a lot of pain and money.
